George Papadopoulos, a financial planner and tax accountant who works with the Thompsons, gets part of the credit. He insists that his clients maximize their 401(k) and IRA contibutions and be free of credit card debt. He says preaching the no-refund gospel may be a noble cause, but it's not always realistic. "No client ever wants to be in the position of owing the government money on April 15," he adds. "Most of them received sizable refunds before becoming my clients and continue to do so. The difference now is now they put it to good use instead of blowing it."
